MEDICARE ALERT:

All you baby boomers who are becoming eligible for Medicare – be careful with the new rules which have been enacted with the New Health Plans.

Beginning 2011 – if you choose a Medicare Advantage Plan, you are only allowed to dis-enrole till February 15 – it used to be till April 1.  And you can’t choose another Medicare Advantage Plan like you used to – you can only disenrole to a traditional Medicare Plan – not an HMO, but you will need to buy a Medigap policy.

Problems with Part B coverage are also cropping up more often. “Anyone who doesn’t sign on for Medicare at age 65 has to understand the special-enrollment-period rules, because they are strict and unforgiving,”

Under the rules, if you are 65, you have to sign up for Part B during the eight months after the month when your group coverage or your employment ends, whichever comes first.

If business owners or executives who sell a family business or leave a longtime employer postpone enrolling in Part B, they can wind up paying premium penalties for life, and they may also have a coverage gap.

Part B, which helps cover doctor visits and other outpatient treatment, costs at least $110.50 a month for new enrollees this year—and could cost more if one’s modified adjusted gross income is above $85,000 for individuals or $170,000 for married couples.
